Our Unique Species

0 / 0

Discover our unique native wildlife and the challenges we face to protect it.

Our native species are taonga, treasures. Many are endemic to New Zealand, only found here.

Species have evolved and adapted in unique ways due to the isolation of the islands of New Zealand and in the absence of ground dwelling predators.

The arrival of humans devastated our native species: destroying habitats, hunting native animals and introducing pests and predators.

Now many of our species are endangered and face extinction.
