Volunteer

Interested in volunteering?

We need you! Committed volunteers play an important role in the everyday running of the centre.

The volunteer roster covers seven days a week and you'll have the opportunity to invest yourself in a variety of roles including: visitor hosting, food preparation, pest control, and general upkeep and cleaning.

From telling the stories of current and past patients, to sharing conservation education messages, to keeping our wildlife safe and healthy - there’s a role for everyone.

We offer in depth training for our volunteers, and ask that you make a commitment for at least six months. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or over, and written parental permission is required for those who are under 18.

You will be required to complete the New Zealand police vetting process, and adhere to the Central Energy Trust Wildbase Recovery Health and Safety protocols.

If you'd like to be a volunteer, please complete the application form below.

Visitor Hosting Roles

Visitor Host

Visitor Hosts play an integral role in our centre. During opening hours Visitor Hosts are stationed around the centre providing general information and guidance to the public. Light cleaning such as surface wiping in the Powerco Education Centre or path sweeping is also a part of this role as required.

Tour Guide

A tour guide is a great opportunity to share the story of Central Energy Trust Wildbase Recovery and its patient journeys. For approximately one hour, you can guide a small group of friendly and appreciative visitors around the centre introducing our residents and discussing our purpose.

Animal Husbandry Roles

Food Preparation

Food preparation is a daily task that requires chopping, measuring and allocating appropriate food for all birds.

Enrichment for Animals

Volunteers can help create an enriching environment for our animals by making toys and devices from natural materials.

General Upkeep and Cleaning

General cleaning and light maintenance is an important part of daily roles. This is done across the facility.

Pest Control

To keep our wildlife safe, trained volunteers will be responsible for the regular checking and rebaiting of traps.

Multi-site

Volunteers can perform roles across both Central Energy Trust Wildbase Recovery and the Victoria Esplanade exotic aviaries.

Please note that volunteers will not be involved in any handling or direct contact with the animals at the centre.
