A safe haven for native animals

Our patients recover at our centre after treatment at Wildbase Hospital, they change regularly as they recover and are released back into the wild.

Our resident animals are with us all the time so there is always something to see.

Red-Crowned Kākāriki

Red-Crowned Kākāriki

Characterised by their bright green plumage and the red pattern on their head.

Red-crowned kākāriki are one of the three species that make up the parakeet group known as kākāriki in New Zealand. They are the largest of the kākāriki species with the Orange-fronted kākāriki or kākāriki karaka being the smallest and the most endangered.

These versatile birds will feed on a variety of food and can be found in many different habitats around New Zealand, primarily found on offshore islands and a few places on the mainland.

These chatty birds can be identified by the ki-ki-ki-ki calls and their long tail feathers.

Resident Red-Crowned Kākāriki

Our latest addition to our ambassador birds is the female Red-crowned parakeet or kākāriki.
