In November 2024, we were honoured to take part in the return of 56 tuatara to their ancestral home of Whakatū/Nelson, a historic milestone for Ngāti Koata as kaitiaki and for The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary.
Preparing these special reptiles for release was no small task. Each tuatara underwent comprehensive health checks and screenings, ensuring they were ready for life in their new habitat. Our team also carefully crafted custom transportation tubes to keep them safe and comfortable on their journey from Palmerston North to Nelson.
Within the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary, each tuatara was provided its own pre-dug burrow, complete with a house number, marking the beginning of their new chapter in the semi-wild.
This significant conservation effort was a collaborative achievement, made possible by Ngāti Koata, The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary, the Department of Conservation, and conservation centres across Aotearoa, including Central Energy Trust Wildbase Recovery, Wildbase, Ngā Manu Nature Reserve, Wellington Zoo Te Nukuao, Natureland Wildlife Trust, and West Coast Wildlife Centre.
