Nicola Toki’s first week as the Department of Conservation’s Threatened Species Ambassador coincides with the Wildbase Recovery Conference. We are delighted to already have Nicola as a Wildbase Recovery Ambassador and are looking forward to her keynote presentation in Palmerston North on Thursday 27 August.

Nicola Toki is a self-confessed nature nerd, who has worked for the conservation of our native wildlife for over ten years. Prior to her Threatened Species Ambassador appointment, she was the project manager for the Living Water partnership between Department of Conservation (DOC) and Fonterra in the South Island.

Nicola’s previous positions also include roles with Forest & Bird and DOC, where she researched, wrote and presented over 200 episodes of “Meet the Locals”, a TVNZ series of mini documentaries on New Zealand’s wildlife.

The Threatened Species Ambassador role oversees national programmes within DOC, will stimulate more collaboration between DOC, businesses and private conservation groups, and encourage New Zealanders to become involved in conservation efforts.

Working with iwi, conservation groups, business, regional and local government, as well as the wider New Zealand public – Nicola’s role mirrors Wildbase Recovery’s collaboration between Palmerston North City Council and Massey University, who are well supported by DOC, Rangitane, Rotary and Lions.
